Sandra's Cycle for Cancer - Vietnam

Story

Hello and thank you for visiting my site

I was shocked to learn that one in two families today are touched by cancer which has overtaken heart disease as the greatest killer in this country. This equates to one new person every five minutes being given the devastating news of a cancer diagnosis.

We have all been touched in some way by cancer whether is has been a sad loss of a family member or friend, a current member undertaking that long and sometimes very lonely road of treatment, the horrid news delivered by the Dr…yes we all feel it. I remember too clearly the day I heard that my Mother had a lump in her breast…the days, the weeks, the months dragged and in our case following surgery the good news.

Personally I have been touched by the loss of very dear friends but in particular the courage of one little girl, named Sarah Carpenter.  Sarah is six years old and is currently going through her own battle with cancer. Just a week ago she underwent a bone marrow transplant and the next 100 days will be harrowing for this little Canberra girl and her family.  Sarah will undergo blood and platelets transfusions every week until her bone marrow recovers enough to enable her to produce her own blood. Then there is the nasal gastric tube required to assist with Sarah’s feeding over the next few months and it is all in hands of medicine and her little body.  Now to add fuel to the fire Sarah’s Grandfather has Stage 4 Melanoma…so to you Rod, this ride is for you too.

The fight for Sarah is out of all our hands, but we can help by supporting the wonderful work undertaken by Cure Cancer Australia.

That is why I am participating in the Cycle for a Cure: Vietnam 2013. Can I say that this is not a holiday it is a physical challenge which I will undertake to push myself out of my comfort zone and not only experience another country but raise funds for this very worthwhile foundation and hopefully one day find a cure for cancer.

Why this foundation?….Cure Cancer Foundation  - is an unique cancer research funding landscape which for the past 45 years has undertaken a invaluable role in funding young researchers at the beginning of their careers. Researchers are the unsung heroes of our age because they are so dedicated to their work, often working long hours, in tough conditions for not very much money. It is their creativity, innovation and passion for new insight that can lead us to a cure.

I am aiming to raise money for Cure Cancer Foundation and welcome any contribution, great or small, that you can make!

I would really appreciate your Support.

My fundraising can be found clicking on the Donate button to make a secure online donation.

All donations over two dollars are tax deductable.

Thank you so much for your support and I look forward to sharing my journey with you.

My thoughts and love to all of our fellow Australians in need of our support.

Best wishes Sandra
